Are you thinking about getting started on your college search? Maybe you have already been thinking about or even visiting colleges but would like some new ideas on where to look. If so, consider attending a college fair in Providence or Boston this spring!

Visiting a college fair can be a great way to begin thinking and talking about college options. A fair is ideal for sophomores and juniors, but parents and students of any age are welcome at these events.

Colleges from all over the U.S. will be represented, and you can speak with admissions reps from each school. They are eager to meet engaged students, so take the opportunity to make some connections and express your interest early!  It is not uncommon for the admissions officer for your region to be at the fair, so conduct yourself with poise and confidence.

The Boston fair is offered over two days: Thursday, April 12,  & Friday, April 13 (morning). The Providence fair will be held in the evening of Tuesday, April 10. They are actually very brief events…it can be overwhelming to enter the convention hall without a plan. There is no way to visit all of the college booths you will pass. If you plan to attend, try to bring a parent, and review the list of colleges exhibiting in advance so you can strategize which booths you don’t want to miss!

Has your college search led you to the “Colleges That Change Lives” yet? The name of this consortium of colleges sure is intriguing. You can learn more about the colleges that make up this group at their website, www.ctcl.org, or by reading Loren Pope’s book that originally brought them together 20 years ago! The book is entitled Colleges That Change Lives: 40 Schools That Will Change the Way You Think about Colleges and it does provide some food for thought!

On Saturday, May 19, the CTCL community will host a college fair at Boston’s Copley Marriott Hotel. If you learn a bit about the CTCL schools and they’ve caught your eye, try making time for this event. There will be a 30-minute presentation on the college search process, followed by a 90-minute college fair. Students do not need to register in advance. Just show up and learn how some of these very cool schools just may change your life!
